Most dogs love the outdoors and they especially don’t like being left behind when you are going out on a fun adventure. As our dogs age, they are no longer physically able to do what their heart still wants to do. I have a Golden Retriever who is almost 12, and he still thinks he wants to go for a walk every day, but he isn’t able to go very far any longer.
If you still like being active and like either going for a bike ride or long hikes, you don’t need to leave your dog behind. With bicycle trailers for large dogs, you are able to take your dog safely along and let them enjoy the fresh air, being with you and all the sights and smells they will experience along the way.
Petsafe makes the Solvit Houndabout Pet Bicycle Trailer which you can use behind your bicycle and you can purchase an attachment to convert it to a dog stroller as well. Let’s look at the Solvit Houndabout Pet Bicycle Trailer review to see if it will fit your needs.

Houndabout Dog Trailer Overview
The Houndabout Dog Trailer will fit any style of bicycle and takes about 30 minutes to fully assemble when you receive it.
Load and unload your dog through the low entrance rear door only. Make sure the trailer is attached to the bike and have someone hold the bike or lay the bicycle flat. Once your dog is safely in the cabin, attach the safety leash to your dog’s collar and adjust the length of the leash so your dog can’t exit through the front window when it is open. Make sure to close the rear door.
The front window has a vinyl waterproof windscreen layer that can be closed if the weather isn’t great, or a breathable mesh layer for air flow or you can leave it completely open. There is a sunroof panel that can either be closed, half open or fully open for your dog to stick his head out. There are straps included for rolling up the windows or sunroof when you want them completely open.
There is a cushion provided for your dog’s comfort that is machine washable and can be dried at low heat.
It comes with a large storage pocket on the side, a water bottle pocket and a smaller pocket for sunglasses, cell phone, keys, etc.
Constructed with 600d polyester and a waterproof floorboard. The standard trailer comes with a lightweight, rustproof aluminum frame making the entire unit only weigh 25 pounds. You can upgrade to a steel frame if you like.
The large size come with two 20″ pre inflated tires (medium is 16″ tires that are not inflated), with cabin dimensions of 33″ long x 22″ wide x 26″ high and overall dimensions of 55″ long x 33″ wide x 33″ high.
Fits dogs up to 110 pounds (medium fits dogs up to 50 pounds).
Includes a universal bicycle hitch.
Safety Features
- 2 red reflectors on back of cabin and on each wheel helping with visibility.
- Reflective strips across the top rear of cabin and lower front of cabin helping with visibility.
- Extra wide wheelbase and lower center of gravity to help provide ride stability and less chance of tipping.
- Low to the ground, making it easier for your dog to get in and out.
- Safety leash – attached to D ring inside the cabin preventing your dog from jumping out.
The Good And The Bad
Good 1: Low entrance for easy entry and exit.
Good 2: Great for older dogs that can no longer go for a long walk.
Good 3: Easy to convert to stroller with converter kit.
Bad 1: A few people have complained about turning corners with the trailer not feeling completely stable.
Bad 2: There are concerns with the bottom not being sturdy enough for large dogs.
Bad 3: Cushion is quite thin. Might want to add your own for better comfort for your dog.
Who Is Product Good For
This dog bike trailer is designed with older dogs in mind. Most younger dogs would rather walk and run around, but if you are going on a really long trip, they could also benefit from getting a stylish ride. With the low entrance this bike trailer has, they are looking out for the safety of an older dog who no longer is as stable on their legs.
If you have an older dog, a dog that has hip dysplasia or suffering from joint pain, this is the perfect option to let your dog feel some dignity by being included with the outing, get some fresh air, see the sights and smell all those great smells.

My Overall Opinion…
Like I mentioned before, I have a Golden Retriever that is getting up there in age. His hips are failing him and even though his heart wants to do all the fun stuff he used to do, he no longer can. That doesn’t change the fact that he still wants to go where I go. With the dog bike trailer, he is able to enjoy some great time outside and not struggle while trying to enjoy it.
I would be very careful turning corners with this trailer especially until you are comfortable with the extra weight. The last thing you want to do is tip the trailer with your dog inside.
If you have a dog that can’t sit still and likes to pace around, I would really caution you using this product. This product works great for a dog that will sit or lie down, but not as well for a dog that is moving around a lot.
Summary
If you want to include your dog on your outdoor activities, getting your dog a bicycle trailer for large dogs might be the best answer to your problem. They will love being included, getting fresh air and feel like a king or queen with the wind blowing in their face.
