There can be several reasons that you might be looking for a dog bed for your dog. You don’t want your dog on your bed and furniture, or you might have an older dog that is having a hard time getting up off of the floor, they can no longer get up on the couch or bed, and you want your dog to have a place to call their own and for them to be comfortable.
There are many choices when it comes to picking out the best dog bed for your dog. I am going to help you with making the decision easier with the orthopedic dog beds review and list the best orthopedic dog bed for older dogs.
For dogs that have arthritis, hip dysplasia and joint and muscle stiffness, an orthopedic dog bed is the best you can offer your dog by giving them the comfort that they need. This is a product that the price directly correlates with the thickness of the memory foam. If you want the most support, you will have to pay for it. Lighter, smaller dogs won’t need as much though, since they weigh less.
There are options for consumers on a budget, but the thickness of the memory foam will reflect the price.

Why Older Dogs Need Orthopedic Dog Beds
An orthopedic dog bed is generally going to be more expensive than some of the other dog beds that are available, but they offer much more comfort for their joints and muscles than a standard dog bed can. We have all seen the dog beds where your dog lies on their bed and it sinks to the floor from your dog’s weight.
Then there are the dog beds that your dog uses for a few months, and it is now as flat as a pancake. I have previously purchased the egg crate type foam beds for my dogs, and before you know it, I have 3 of them stacked up on top of each other, just to provide some type of cushion for my dog.
With an orthopedic dog bed, the firmness is going to remain. They also provide the support that an older dog needs when trying to get up from the bed, making it easier for them to get off of the bed.

Understanding Orthopedic Dog Beds
Orthopedic dog beds are made with memory foam, which is recommended for older dogs. Memory foam conforms to your dog’s shape and provides support for aching joints and muscles.
Memory foam in orthopedic beds is temperature sensitive. It will warm from contact of your dog’s body, and will soften enough to provide comfort without losing its firmness.
It is easier for older dogs to get off of memory foam beds because of the firmness and support that the bed provides.
It is recommended that you provide your dog with 3″ to 5″ of foam or more for senior dogs.
Review
I highly recommend that if you have an older dog, that you provide them with an orthopedic dog bed. They will provide much better support for your dog that may have arthritis, hip dysplasia or joint or muscle stiffness.
An orthopedic dog bed isn’t going to flatten out on you, causing your dog extra pressure on their already sore bodies.
When choosing the right size dog bed for your dog, the width is the most important measurement. With your dog standing, measure from the bottom of their paw to the top of their hip or shoulder. Add 3″ to 4″ to that measurement so your dog can be fully outstretched on their dog bed for the most comfort.
All of the orthopedic dog beds come shipped flatten out, and require 24 – 48 hours for the bed to reach its full expansion. You will need to give it time to expand.
Many of the reviews have complaints about how waterproof the product actually is. Regardless of purchasing a dog bed that is waterproof or not, if you are concerned with your dog having problems, I recommend that you purchase a waterproof mattress pad and cut it to fit your dog bed. It is less expensive than purchasing a liner with the dog bed, and it will work effectively to prevent your dog from soiling the memory foam. You can even use a garbage bag if need be.
